License Plate to VIN Lookup

Enter a U.S. license plate and state to find the vehicle's VIN and decoded specifications. VinWhere shows vehicle data only — never owner names, addresses, or private DMV records.

We only return the vehicle's VIN and decoded specs. No owner name, address, or private DMV records are ever shown.

Can you find a VIN from a license plate?

In many cases, yes. A license plate number plus the issuing state can be matched to the vehicle's VIN using available vehicle registration or history data. VinWhere then decodes the VIN to show vehicle specifications such as year, make, model, trim, engine, and factory data. Coverage varies, and VinWhere does not show owner names, addresses, or private DMV records.

Data sources and limitations

VinWhere matches a license plate and state to a VIN using vehicle data partners where available. Once a VIN is found, we decode the vehicle specifications using the official NHTSA vPIC database and brand-specific sources. Plate-to-VIN matching depends on the state, plate format, vehicle type, plate transfers, and data freshness, so coverage varies. A no-match result does not always mean the plate is invalid — you can enter the VIN directly to continue.

Privacy & the DPPA

VinWhere is a vehicle specification service. A plate-to-VIN lookup returns only the VIN and factory data for the vehicle. The federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) restricts using a plate number or VIN to obtain an owner's name or address. VinWhere does not provide, store, or display any personal information about the vehicle's owner.

Frequently asked questions

Can you find a VIN from a license plate?+

In many cases, yes. A license plate number plus the issuing state can be matched to the vehicle's VIN using available vehicle registration or history data. VinWhere then decodes the VIN to show specifications like year, make, model, trim, and engine. Coverage varies, and VinWhere does not show owner names, addresses, or private DMV records.

Is it legal to look up a VIN from a license plate?+

Looking up a vehicle's specifications by plate is generally permitted because a VIN and factory specs are vehicle data, not personal data. Using plate or VIN data to obtain an owner's name or address is restricted under the federal Driver's Privacy Protection Act (DPPA) — VinWhere never returns owner information.

Can I find the owner of a car from a license plate?+

No. VinWhere does not provide owner names, addresses, or contact information. Owner details from motor vehicle records are protected under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act and are not available here.

Why do you need the state?+

License plates are issued per state and are only unique within a state, so the same plate number can exist in multiple states. The issuing state is required to identify the correct vehicle.

Why can't every plate be matched to a VIN?+

Matching depends on the state, plate format, vehicle type, plate transfers, and how fresh the underlying data is. A no-match result does not always mean the plate is invalid — you can enter the VIN directly to continue.

Does it work for motorcycles, trailers, or temporary plates?+

Coverage is strongest for standard passenger vehicles. Motorcycles, trailers, commercial vehicles, and temporary or specialty plates may not match. If there's no match, use the free VIN decoder instead.

Is a VIN considered private information?+

A VIN identifies the vehicle, not the owner, and is visible through the windshield and on public documents. VIN decoding returns factory specifications only. Owner information tied to a VIN is what's protected, and VinWhere never displays it.

Where does the vehicle data come from?+

VinWhere matches the plate to a VIN using vehicle data partners where available, then decodes the VIN using the official NHTSA vPIC database and brand-specific sources. Owner information is never accessed or shown.

How is this different from a VIN decoder or vehicle history report?+

A plate-to-VIN lookup finds the VIN from a plate. A VIN decoder shows factory specifications from a VIN. A vehicle history report is a separate paid product that may include accident, title, and ownership-event data. VinWhere's plate lookup and VIN decoding are free.
