Free VIN decoding No account required No owner or DMV records
VinWhere is a free VIN decoder and VIN lookup tool. Enter a 17-character VIN to decode factory vehicle information such as year, make, model, trim, engine, drivetrain, body style, fuel type, manufacturer, country, and assembly plant when available. VinWhere's basic VIN decoding is free and does not require an account. VinWhere does not show owner names, addresses, or private DMV records.
A VIN decode shows how a vehicle was built at the factory. It is different from a vehicle history report, which may include accident history, title brands, odometer records, ownership events, service records, recalls, complaints, and other buyer-research data. After the free VinWhere decode, users may optionally continue to a CarWhere full report for deeper vehicle research.

How VIN decoding works
Every vehicle built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN defined by the ISO 3779 standard. Each position encodes specific information about the vehicle:
WMI — World Manufacturer Identifier (positions 1–3)
Identifies who built the vehicle and in which country. The first character indicates the country of manufacture.
VDS — Vehicle Descriptor Section (positions 4–9)
Encodes the model, body style, engine, and restraint system. Position 9 is a check digit that mathematically validates the VIN.
VIS — Vehicle Identifier Section (positions 10–17)
Gives the model year (position 10), the assembly plant (position 11), and the unique production serial number.

VIN country codes (position 1)
